The Taoiseach Enda Kenny is wrong to claim that austerity is coming to an end | Michael Burke

Ireland is being held up once more as the star pupil of the austerity school of economics in Europe, with the Taoiseach Enda Kenny arguing that his government is exiting the bailout programme set by the troika of European Union, the European Central Bank and the IMF. He says the era of austerity is coming to an end.
Both of these claims are clearly questionable, but they do illuminate some important features of the situation in Europe

From June 2011 I Support Irish will target the lucrative US market where online retail sales grew 12.6% in 2010 to reach $176.2 billion. With an expected 10% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2010 to 2015, US eCommerce is expected to reach $278.9 billion in 2015* (Forrester)
Kavanagh says that he will target the Irish American Diaspora of 45 million plus those who seek out Irish goods such as designer wear, hurleys, crafts, foods and jewellery. It’s good news for Irish brands who don’t have a web presence and who need to take advantage of an e-commerce environment through our portal” he said.
Retail partners featured on the site include the renowned artist Graham Knuttel, Jim Fitzpatrick, Irish designer Jennifer Rothwell, Crystal & Co Jewellery, Cookery expert Clodagh McKenna, antique fireplace producer Belle Cheminee, Mercier Press the publishers, Rockstar Tan, kiddies clothes producer McCul Clothing, Handcraft Hurleys, Smoked Salmon producer Burren Smokehouse, Bog Buddies, Retro GAA vintage jersey producers and cosmetics producer Ri na Mara.
There is no charge for featured brands listed on the site. Instead partner brands are charged a 10% commission which includes the costs of online payment charges.
Kavanagh continued “This is really an online department store set to capitalise on the surge in the growth of the online retail sector at a time when the traditional retail model is steadily declining in Ireland. Ireland is being used as a test market. The company is currently searching for a further 200 companies including those seeking export opportunities. Plans are also underway to tap into the UK, China and Russian markets.
